Comicon 2010 day 1

First day of Comicon. We got there before 11am and stayed till almost 8pm! It helped that there are tons of different things going on, and we got to hang out with my friends Jordan and Fabio, and chatted to Daniel and Donna from Monster Commute. There were tons of people in great home made costumes from every scifi movie / tv show / comic / anime you can think of. We took pictures of just a few of them and will have to try and get many more tomorrow.

There were two main highlights of the day though for me:

First we got to spend an hour listening to Keir Dullea (Dr. Dave Bowman) & Gary Lockwood (Dr. Frank Poole) reminiscing about starring in the classic 1968 movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". What made it even funnier was the fan who showed up dressed as HAL from the movie, complete with glowing red eye and playing back clips of HALs dialog, prompting Gary to shout "Keep him away from me, he already killed me once!" and Keir to ask him "Can you open the pod bay doors HAL?". Unfortunately the HAL costume only came down to the guys waist and then there was denim shorts and some skinny legs ~ nicely explained away by the announcement that HAL was doing "casual friday":-) Later on in the day I saw them again and got them to sign a poster from the movie, although I felt a bit guilty for interrupting Keir while he was chatting to his wife on the phone - oops. I've been a big fan of Keir's since I saw 2001 as a kid, and it was great to meet him as he's a genuinely nice guy.

The second highlight of the day was Will Wheaton's Awesome Hour! If you grew up watching "Star Trek: The Next Generation" then you'll remember Will as Wesley Crusher. What you may not know is that he's a really good story teller and hilariously funny. He kept a packed hall of geeks laughing as he reminisced about trying to get his kids (weened on modern day gaming systems like XBox 360 and Sony Playstation) into the simple delights of the original Atari 2600 :-) From their initial "It's lame, you're lame!" responses they quickly found themselves addicted to the same games we all played back in the 80's. His hour+ on stage was being broadcast live out on to the web, and its worth looking out for, I'll post a link if I can find it anywhere. Sally's favorite moment came when Will was asked if his wife was a nerd. Will replied no, but she's been around me for so long no that she's picked a lot of it up, so she's like "Nerd Adjacent". Sally couldn't stop laughing at that one, and has now adopted the title for herself, grrrr!

And finally I know some of you geeky boy mates of mine will be extremely jealous to hear that yes we did briefly see Felicia Day today, and we'll be seeing much more of her tomorrow... along with Jonathan Frakes, Levar Burton, and possibly some Rock Band with Will Wheaton...
